Name: Tirael
Age: 16 seasons (if'n that's the scale this site goes by)
Gender: Male
Species: River otter
Marital Status: Huh? At this age?
Position and Home He lives at Redwall, and works in the infirmary. (Maybe infirmary keeper?)
Strengths: Tirael is vastly knowledgeable about plants and herbs, which greatly contributes to his capacity as an infirmary worker. He is also an extremely loyal friend, and can show unexpected bursts of bravery to help when someone he cares is in danger.
Weaknesses: Tirael is awkward. Very awkward. He is incredibly shy around people he hasn't met, and rarely initiates conversation unless it's urgent, or if he is feeling confident. He is even somewhat like this around those he does know, though they generally manage to draw him out when he's not upset. He's also a burden if he is caught in the middle of a battle; he has practically no training, and doesn't have a very good warrior's instinct. Therefore, he relies on the defense provided by others.
Alignment: Devoutly good
Appearance: Tirael is slim, strong but not meaty. He has chocolate-brown fur, except for his underbelly, which is creamy off-white. His eyes are a deep, dark blue. He wears a typical light-green habit while in the abbey, belted with a silken white habit cord. He also wears typical Redwaller sandals. When he leaves the abbey, he takes a dark blue cloak and, if he is out to gather herbs for the infirmary, a burlap messenger bag.
Personality: Tirael is very quiet, and as mentioned above, is all but incapable of simple socialization. He is a little paranoid about offending others, and this frequently factors into the way he interacts with others. He can be funny at times, though it isn't often that he feels comfortable enough to try. Despite this, he isn't actually anti-social; he tries, but he finds it difficult.
As Tirael doesn't spend a whole lot of time talking, he reads incessantly. He has read every reference, journal, and log the abbey library has to offer in terms of medicine, and is beginning to read the historical records. He reads quickly, and has good recall; this makes him a bit of a walking encyclopedia and dictionary, and also makes his form of speech a bit less accented and informal than that of others. He is very helpful, and is glad to help when anyone asks.
History: Tirael was born in a small holt in the south of Mossflower. He lived with his family for five seasons there, and from what he can remember, it was a close family. A week before he became five seasons old, a large band of Juska attacked his home. His mother shoved him and his sister Streamlily into a log, telling them to stay quiet. They waited for hours, and eventually the noise died away. His sister went to find out what happened; she came back, and wouldn't let her brother see. She had brought a small sack filled with the food she had managed to salvage from their home, and holding Tirael's paw, they left.
Without a family, they spent three seasons alone, wandering north without really knowing where to go. They found help with a few kind woodlanders along the way, though they never stayed anywhere for over a week or so. At the end of their strength, they ran smack into a tribe of river rats. In the ensuing chase, his right arm was cut open by an arrow, he was bruised, battered, and hit by a slingstone to the head. He fell at this point, breaking his left footpaw in the process. Unable to move, even with his sister's help, he was sure he was about to die; only the timely arrival of a group of Redwallers kept them from joining their family in the Dark Forest.
After spending over a week in the infirmary, Tirael remained quiet and confused, as he couldn't remember anything before the chase. Streamlily had disappeared while he was unconscious; she never told anybody why she left, and has yet to return or be heard from. Tirael never gave very specific details of his pre-abbey life to anybody, and some wonder if he remembers anything specific at all.
Tirael tried his paw at several different jobs in the abbey, but never seemed to click with any of them. He found his passion in herbs while on a brief Mossflower expedition to gather some. After this revelation, he applied himself diligently, and soon became an invaluable infirmary brother. He has worked in this capacity for five seasons. At this point, he has read all of the abbey's references on herbs and healing, and as such he is also turning to the historical writings. While not an expert on this, he is more knowledgeable than most, and can be of assistance to creatures in need of either types of information. This has been his life since he came to Redwall, and he would never give it up for anything.
