Personality :: Around his fellow hordebeasts, he is known for being hard to be fellows with, showing favor or respect only on a precious few beasts. He is neverthless not 'verminish', despite his bad side alignment. He was brought up amonst gentlebeasts who knew a useful trade. Therefore he does not misspell words or speak in a disrespectful matter. Other vermin think he is funny in the head because he carries no blade and uses no other weapon , save the quarterstaff, a non-lethal weapon. He brooks an eternal hatred toward the race of mice, and his traitorus uncle. However, he will only kill a mice if it is armed and able to fight. If the mouse is an infant, or unable to fight, he either gives it to the care of vermin parents or simply demolishes their dwelling. As a member of the line of the Dirge, he can break into a uncontrollable rage when he is angered.
History: Lentle Dirge was born as the second of two in a litter. His parents were called Teril Dirge and Fritle Dirge, barrack room- cooks in an army kept by a savage grey rat. His brother was called Krent, and they were twins down to their very toes. Growing up, his father, Fritle taught him how to read and even write (to some extent). This was because, Fritle was a beast of learning, keeping scrolls he had gathered from beasts the warlord had conquered. Whenever the army brought back loot for the fair division of treasure, he would always sift through the pile until he found scrolls or writing(for vermin just grab whatever they can see in looting). He imparted this message to his sons: 'To cook is importent and noble art, but learning can oft put you at an advantage. This is especially true amongst beasts who may underestimate you because of their persceptiion that vermin are stupid beasts'. He would then add He and his brother would often eagerly help out in the kitchens. Krent, being short, would oft just grab the ingredients within reach, However Lentle would use a long pole to grab ingredients on the higher shelfs, being careful never to let it drop.
One day, he was helping out in the kitchens alone with his father, when he reached for an ingredient with the pole, then failed to catch it on its fall down. His father, percieving that his sons eyes were clouding up with fustration told him, 'Son, Know ye that you are of the line of the fabled Dirgecallers themselves'. Lentle was astonished, "The dirgecallers! I thought those savage beasts were just the stuff of legend! you mean they were real?"
His father replied, "Yes, they were real, our line has passed time out of mind forgot to allbeasts save scholars. I myself only learned this whilst I set out to make a genealogy of ermine. We of the Dirge can turn into savage beasts when we are angered, son, but I say this son, do not let fear or anger rule you, let you head." The next day, Lentle was set out to look for a 'rare ingredient'. Little did he know that it was only to save him from doom unimaginable! As he was exiting the barrack- room, he took little notice of his uncle, Krand Dirge, passing by with a hooded figure in tow. When Lentle came back from his fruitless quest, he saw his uncle running side by side with (now unhooded)mouse holding a blood stained sword.
Fearing the worst, he ran up the barracks into the kitchens, where he beheld the worst. His parents lay slain, and scattered parchment littered the floor. His brother however, was still alive.
As Lentle held his dying brothers head in his hand he learned what had ocurred." Krand. It was krand, He wanted our father to give him the tome of power, which would show him the secrets of the world. When father refused to give it to him, he said he had asked nicely, but now would have to take it by force. He whistled, and his partner, a mouse with a bright sword stepped forth. He slew our mother right off , then attcked me, but our father was too quick for him. He struck him with your pole lentle, but Krand held one end of the pole so that the mouse could striiiiiiiiiiiiikeeeeeeeee" So passed Krent.
Lentle was so upset, that he grabbed the window pole and ran out of the baracks, leaving them forever. That night, as he slept on the cold barren ground, he swore a blood oath against his uncle and also swore war against all the race of mice. The long days passed, he wandered the land. One day he stumbled upon a cave containg an empty forge. A dead badger lied upon the cold earth beside the forge, a slash mark to his face. After burying the badger in the snow, Lentle notice theat the forge still had liquid metal on it. He stuck the window pole he carried into the liquid metal, then waited till it cooled. Then he took the forge hammer, and bent the metal around the pole to the shape of the pole. After the the metal was solidly in pole form, he took the pole and threw it onto the ground. Taking the hollow metal pole, he welded the ends up to make it a true quarterstaff!
Long did he travel, but eventually he ended up on the crew of a pirate ship that raided the coasts of the mossflower continent. He is considering deserting, and is thus eligible to join any established vermin band
